Altered Denim Jacket

Recently I was at an antique fair.  There was a woman there selling altered denim jackets.  My daughter and I LOVED those jackets, but they were a bit pricey for our wallets at that moment.  Being the crafty girls that we are (well, I’m the crafty girl, my daughter is more the “you can make that for me can’t you?”), we decided to find a used denim jacket and renew it with our alterations.

This was a fairly simple project.  You could add all kinds of embellishments.  I came up with many, but my daughter didn’t want me to go over the top.  So, we found a home dec. print on sale that Elena liked.  I cut out a panel to cover the back panel of the jacket and a panel to cover the collar.

My Monthly Small Journal Quilt Project

In September, 2009, I was in need of a cathartic project.  Around that time I was reading an issue of Quilting Arts Magazine in which someone had made a quilt every week (or maybe it was every day) for a year.  I decided this would be a good project, however, I doubted I would keep up with a project that involved making something every week, even if they were small.

I decided to challenge myself to make a small quilt once a month for a year.  The quilts were to be representative in some way of the month that had just passed.  I decided small squares approximately 6” to 7” would be a good size.

My challenge is to make representative quilts without using the same techniques each month.  For example, I do not want to end this challenge with 12 little scenes.  I love making little scenes, but I’ve done that quite a bit.  If I did that it would definately tell me where the journey of the year went, but I also want to challenge myself.

Spring Wreath

Recently I saw a wreath project online that I really liked:

http://tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com/2010/01/2010-burlap-wreath-and-giveaway.html

When I came home from Hawaii last week it occurred to me that since Valentine’s Day was over I needed new wreaths for the doors.  This weekend in a fit of spring fever I decided to make my version of the tatertots and Jello wreath.  On a very rainy Friday afternoon, my daughter and I trooped over to the local crafts store to buy wreath forms.  While wandering the isles I found a package of spring buttons.  Now, of course I have about a million buttons, but that package was all sorted and inexpensive so I picked up the package of buttons and came home to start my project.

I have double front doors so needed to make 2 wreaths.  I bought 14″ wreath forms.  For the flowers, I cut circles approximately 2″ and 3″.  I used 2 charm packs that I had laying around.  For those of you who are not quilters, a charm pack is a package of 42 – 5″ squares.  I found that if I was creative with my cutting, I could get either 4 – 2″ circles or 2 3″ circles out of each 5″ square.   I cut about 100 – 2″ circles and 100 – 3″ circles out of burlap.  Out of my other fabrics, I cut about 300 2″ circles and 300 3″ circles.

Hummingbird Saga

In 2001 I took a class from JoAnn Pinto.  She is an exceptional dollmaker.  The class was “Birds and Their Companions”.  It taught us how to transform a photograph into a 3-D object. I chose to make a hummingbird.  I have always loved hummingbirds.  I love how tiny and animated they are and how fiesty they are!  It turned into a project of epic proportions!

This is a picture of the finished hummer:

Ever have one of those sidetracked kind of days?

Have you ever had one of those days when the thing(s) that you woke up thinking you were going to do does not even come close to what you end up doing?  That was my day today…

My daughter (14 years old) recently quit swim team.  Not wanting her to forego the benefits of exercise, we have enrolled her in yoga classes.   The first night, I grabbed a blank canvas tote for her to carry her stuff in.  The next time she wanted to take that same blank canvas tote.

Are you getting the picture, AAAWWWKKK – BLANK canvas tote – that’s where my mind has been going.  I mean, blank canvas tote, REALLY!  Have I not made a million cute totes to give to friends and neighbors for gifts?  Yes, I have!  So today, after breakfast and yes, a bit of facebooking, instead of sitting down to finish that quilt I’ve been working on, I decided to make a little monster which led to making a new tote.

I’ve monsters on the mind since before Christmas when I saw a project online.  You can see project at the following link:

So I decided to make my own version of a monster tote.  I used blanket stitch around the eyes and the monster.  I actually have never tried blanket stitch before.   The rest of the parts I just stitched down near the edge.

For the lining, I used a center panel of the monster’s material with side panels of the black dotted fabric.

I love the black dotted fabric.  I bought it last summer when my husband & I spent a couple of days in San Francisco.  One day while he had business meetings, I walked over to Britex Fabrics.  If you are not from the San Francisco area or do not know fabric, it’s 4 floors of heaven just off Union Square.  Here’s a tip though if you’ve never been, go up to the floor that has remnants.  You can get wonderful pieces of fabrics at a fraction of the cost.  Their remnants are usually multiple yard cuts.

Hope you like my little tote.  My daughter will definitely be more stylish at yoga class!  Please leave me your comments!
